Thursday Therapy: Wallpaper Comeback

Wallpaper is BACK and it is better than ever. Artists and manufacturers are developing some gorgeous wall applications that we’re happy to share with you. Several come in different variations and colorways – who needs art when you have a wall that IS art? The options are really endless thanks to these wonderful companies.

On the Job with Canary: Nursery Canopies

One of our current clients is going to be adopting a baby soon!  I’m so excited for her that I can barely stand it.   We are working on a neutral nursery to prepare for the big event.  Recently, I have been thinking a canopy might be perfect for the new little addition.  Here’s some inspiration from Pinterest

With endless choices of fabric, I am sure we will come up with the perfect combination!  Off to pull more ideas….

Thursday Therapy: Candles

Doesn’t everyone love a great candle?  I know I do.  There’s nothing better than wrapping up in your favorite blanket, grabbing a book and glass of wine and lighting the perfect candle.  Here are some of my favorites:

{1} Lafco named one after each room of the house – perfect for our recent client, a gift from Paper Affair in Dallas.  {2} A recent gift from my sweet neighbor.  Thank you!  {3} Love etched glass container of the Capri Candle from Jonathan Adler.  {4} Oh Michael Arms, I do love you too!  From Neiman Marcus.

At Canary + Lime, we use candles in a variety of ways with our clients.  Sometimes we choose one because of its stunning glasswork that help make our room sing.  Other times, they make the perfect client gift packaged in the most beautiful box ever.   We also use them to create ambiance in various settings whether it be a hopping outdoor dinner party, a relaxing spa or an intimate dinner gathering.  Candles not only add interest to a room, but they can also bring a soothing scent in selected environments.  You have to be smart about it though.  No ones wants to smell pineapple birthday cake at your next fiesta.

Three quick recommendations from C+L?  1) Avoid using scented candles at a dinner table as there are already plenty of scents going around  2) If you sense the candle is tacky or smells funny, it does – keep it simple  3)  Get creative – mix candles with natural things like pomegranates, tree bark and other candles.

So grab a few of your favorites and put them to use in your home.  Which ones are you going to use?

On the Job with Lime: Frogs

I could list a million great things about designing, but one of the BEST things about interior design is meeting new people with different interests.  At C+L, our current favorite is a little boy who loves frogs and has a bunch of them as pets.  Going into this project, I had a slight fear of the hoppity green things, but I’ve slowly overcome my fear the more I’ve learned from our little 10-year old client.  I still like to keep a good 2′ away from frogs though!

A little inspiration to get us thinking about the bedroom for our frog loving client:

This is already starting to be a fun project.  I can’t wait to see how his love for frogs is incorporated!

Thursday Therapy: Etsy

I’m pretty disciplined when I go to the mall or any retail store.  Etsy, on the other hand, is a different story.  My love for etsy boils down to my love for handmade items, the option to customize my purchase, and the desire to support small businesses — all in one click.  It’s just so easy to find the perfect item on my never ending “must have” list.  C+L has also benefited from scoring some nice items on etsy for clients.  Take a peek at some of my current favs out there:

There are some amazing creative people out in etsy world and I love how inspiration can follow after a few clicks on one of my favorite sites!

On the Job with Canary: Design Camp here we come!

I read a lot of blogs.  Seriously.  Annagae thinks I’m nuts.  So along with blogging here on C+L and managing the blog team for Dwell with Dignity, I read 10-20 other blogs each week.  I love it because I always get new ideas for clients, find new sources for furniture and laugh at some of the hilarious bloggers out there.

Several weeks ago, I was reading “All the Best” blog by Ronda Carman.  She was unveiling a new Design Camp that sounded rocking.  On top of it, she was giving away free tickets to the camp on her blog.  What!?!  It wasn’t long before I was typing away about why Annagae and I should be worthy of such a freebie.

Then, suddenly this happened:

We won!  So on October 24th, Annagae and I are grabbing our road sodies and headed south to Austin.  We can’t wait to hit the cocktail party and learn more from the most respected professionals in the industry.  Want to join us?   Check it out.  Spots are limited but we hope to see you there!

Thursday Therapy: Barbara Barry

People often ask me who my favorite designer is.  It’s really hard to say and often times it just depends on what mood I’m in.  David Hicks, Kelly Wearstler, Kate Spade…perhaps.  One designer I truly love, especially when it comes to her fabrics and furniture, is Barbara Barry.  She has such a classic and elegant style.

Beyond her design firm, she has an extensive line of furnishings including:  Ann Sacks (tile), Baccarat Crystal, Baker Furniture, Boyd Lighting, Bloomingdale’s (bed & bath), Blueridge Carpets, Kallista (bathroom fixtures), Kravet (textiles), McGuire Furniture (outdoor collection), Tufenkian (carpets), Visual Comfort (lighting) and Wedgwood (tabletop).   Here are some of my favorites:

{1} Barbara Barry Sphere – purchased in NYC @ Baker now in my office  {2} Wedgwood Plates by Barbara Barry  {3} Baker Furniture – love that chair  {4} Bedroom Scene – adore the fringed lamp

If Ms. Barry inspires you as well, be sure to check out her upcoming book, Around Beauty, which is available on pre-release through Amazon.

On the Job with Lime: Maps

It’s scary how attached I am to my googlemaps app.  I didn’t realize that until Eddie and I had to use an old school fold out map to navigate our way through Canada.  I’m a bit embarrassed to say I was afraid to use the map, but after our 2nd destination, I was rocking it and totally loved not relying on the little GPS dot.  Thanks to technology, printed maps have become somewhat neglected, but we’ve recently fallen in love with them again at Canary + Lime.

Our clients love sailing and Paris (who can blame them?).  They want art to reflect either one so we went on a hunt to find something that was perfect their home office.

And now I have a big craving for a fresh baguette and some cheese.  Au revoir!

On the Job with Canary: Bulletin Boards

Shhh….I’m secretly working on my office.  I know I absolutely need some type of inspiration board somewhere in my C+L workspace.  It has to be something colorful and fun, yet something that allows me to tack up ideas in a snap.  Here’s some great ideas I ran across….

1
2
3
4

{1} Pinterest clipboard board – This arrangement would allow me to breakup ideas by client  {2} Pinterest white board – Perhaps white is the way to go and it won’t interfere with the colors I’m working  {3} Ballard Designs large board – This would be great…if I only had the space  {4} Pinterest custom board – Fabric and nailheads might be a great way to incorporate some fun

Better get back to work on the “real” clients, but I hope this inspires you to find a great way to get organized.
